This was, and is, a way of communicating with my children, whom I love but do not
see. They don’t receive or read my letters, they don’t phone or text. I want something
permanent that will convey how I feel. I know at some stage in their lives they will
read what I have written. I switched to verse because it is indestructible whereas
my written letters to them had become trite and formulaic. This is also the reason
why the verse begins from number sixty-
